Crocheting My First Blanket: A Journey of Color and Creativity

In January, while scrolling through TikTok, I stumbled upon the vibrant world of crochet, and it ignited a spark of creativity in me. I remembered the basics from my childhood, when my mom taught me how to knit, but all I had ever made was a scarf. With those skills faded from memory, I decided it was time to embark on a new adventure—crocheting my first blanket!

Getting Started

I placed an order at Michael’s for some crochet hooks and the cheapest yarn I could find. I wanted to dive in without breaking the bank! Armed with my supplies, I turned to YouTube for guidance. The first tutorials I watched were by simplydaisy15, who did a fantastic job breaking down the basics for total beginners like me.

My first successful project was a granny square. After a few tries, I managed to stitch together a small blanket that now cozies up my office chair. It was the perfect way to ease into crocheting while adding a personal touch to my workspace.

A Bigger Challenge: The Hexadaisy Crochet Blanket

I came across the Hexadaisy Crochet Blanket designed by Meema Makes. As soon as I saw it, I knew this would be my first major project. I had also recently seen a TikTok about a bride who made blankets for each of her bridesmaids, which sparked the idea to create a blanket that reflected my wedding colours. However, reality quickly set in when I realized how time-consuming it would be to make one for each bridesmaid!

Instead, I decided to create a different crochet project for each of them. But I was still determined to complete the Hexadaisy blanket as a personal challenge.

Planning My Layout

Once I gathered all my yarn, I spent some time on my computer mapping out the layout of my hexagons. I wanted to make sure the colors blended beautifully, so I carefully planned how many of each color I needed. In total, I crocheted 50 hexagons and 8 half hexagons.

Referencing the pattern I worked out on my computer.

The process was both fun and meditative, as I watched my vision come to life, one stitch at a time. Each hexagon was like a tiny piece of art, and I loved seeing how the colors interacted.

Finishing Touches

After assembling the hexagons, I finished off the blanket with a simple border, which not only added a polished look but also helped tie everything together. The sense of accomplishment I felt when I finally finished was indescribable!

Crocheting my first blanket has been a rewarding journey, filled with learning and creativity. It’s a project I’m proud of, not just for the finished product, but for the skills I gained along the way.

Looking Ahead

I can’t wait to take on more crochet projects in the future—perhaps even that original idea of making blankets for my bridesmaids someday. If you’re thinking about picking up crochet or any craft, I highly encourage you to dive in. You never know where it might lead you! 🧶✨
